The Central Region of the Diocese of Lafayette is pleased to announce its annual RISE program from July 18-24, 2010, at Camp Woodmen in Abbeville.  All high school age youth (incoming 9th graders through graduates) are invited to participate.

RISE (Rising In Service to Everyone) is a weeklong overnight work retreat program designed to teach young people to live a Christ-centered life of service.  Over the course of a week, teams of high school youth will visit select worksites in the community and spend the day doing repairs, painting, yard work, clean-up, etc.

“RISE is an annual program that is similar to a weeklong mission trip,” explains Mary Bergeron, Executive Assistant to the Vicar for the Central Region, “except that instead of traveling to another country or other parts of the United States, we serve those in need right here in our own community.”  One participant captured the experience by saying, “RISE is change.  You come to RISE and you work hard and pray, but you leave here with a deeper commitment to Christ.  You leave wanting to serve others.”

Each day of RISE begins with Mass.  Upon returning to Camp Woodmen each evening, the young people attend nighttime sessions that include praise and worship, speakers, small group reflections, music, etc.  Eucharistic Adoration is held one evening, and the Sacrament of Reconciliation is offered.  The last full day of RISE will be a day of recreation and fellowship for the entire group.

RISE will conclude with a closing Mass on Saturday, July 24, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at Camp Woodmen.  This Mass will be celebrated by Very Rev. Thomas James, SVD, VE, Episcopal Vicar for the Central Region.  Families and friends of RISE participants and chaperones are invited to attend.
